The Honda Si began back in 1984 with the first generation release. Over the last 33 years, Honda has released 10 generations of Si models and continues to progress.
The Si concoction has always been a simple process: Utilize the current Honda Civic coupe/sedan, increase the horsepower, increase performance in brakes and suspension, and add some exterior touches to give a sportier feel. And Honda does not seem to be straying far from that formula with the 2017 release, why should they? But there are some nifty little tid-bits to keep an eye on.
For starters, the 2017 Si comes with a 6 speed transmission that includes a limited slip differential which is sure to bring most of the 205 ponies to the road. The overall performance of the Si is great. Engine power is adequate, but more power would be nice, wouldn’t it? Well, despite its 15HP deficiency compared to some of it’s competitors (VW GTI), Honda makes up for it in that it weighs ~200 pounds less than the GTI. Furthermore, thanks to the MHI TD03 9-vane 20+PSI turbo charger (same turbo used in the CR-V), from a simple re-tune you can see increases of 30-40HP alone!
Another trick the Si has under it’s shell is it’s two way adaptive suspension system. As expected, the Si comes with a sturdier and stiffer suspension system and upgraded hardware. But with the 2017 model you can now switch between normal and sport mode. The sport mode provides a stiffer ride and flatter, more even cornering. The responsiveness is another characteristic that effects the sport mode. The engine is more responsive and the suspension is quicker to respond to driver input. This provides the driver more options as to whether they want to treat the Si as a normal daily driver and reduce gas consumption, or rev it up a bit more for when you are feeling edgy!
The list below will highlight the most notable changes/additions found in the 2017 Si:
- Sport Mode
- Increased HP to 205 and 192 lb. torque.
- Center mounted exhaust
- More driver information such as boost gauge meter, G force meter, brake pressure, etc.
- Limited slip differential
- Si stitched seats – more padding
- Short throw shifter
- Single-mass flywheel
- Leather interior components/foe carbon fiber interior trim
